“National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.” ~Wallace Stegner

2009-OBX

We drove from Knoxville, TN into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GSM NP) today. The park was gorgeous. We did a 1.3 mile (each way) hike to see Laurel Falls. The kids did their best on the hike and made it the whole way.

We found a National Park Series CD and listened as we drove through the park. Those smokies are beautiful. Hiking and driving through a National Park rank at the top of my list of joyous activities.

We drove several hours from the park and stopped in Greensboro, NC for the night. For the second night in a row we tried to check in to 5 hotels before we could find one with an available room. Max was quite intriged by this process and kept asking “do they have beds for us?” I think he might have really wondered if we would have to sleep in the car. What innocence.  Tomorrow it is off to the beach.
